What is Porcelain?
Porcelain is a ceramic material made from kaolin, feldspar and quartz, fired at high temperatures. The result is a hard, smooth and glossy surface that lends itself perfectly to decorative applications. Especially for furniture knobs, porcelain is valued for combining practical strength with a refined appearance.
A Short History
Porcelain originated in China and became highly popular in Europe from the 18th century. It was considered a luxury product, widely used in tableware, ornaments and furniture fittings. Porcelain furniture knobs were already applied in classical and country interiors and remain beloved today thanks to their timeless charm and versatility.
Indoor and Outdoor Use
Porcelain is ideal for indoor use. It stays beautiful for a long time, is hygienic and easy to clean. For outdoor use it is less suitable: the material can be damaged more easily by temperature fluctuations or impacts. That’s why porcelain knobs are mainly used on cabinets, dressers and drawers inside the home.
Best Installation Practices
Porcelain is strong but sensitive to cracks under too much pressure. Most porcelain knobs come with a fixed mounting bolt already attached. This is secured from the back of the furniture front with the supplied nut. Tighten the nut slowly and evenly; too much force can create stress and cause the porcelain to crack. A proper fit with the furniture ensures durability and prevents loosening.
Cleaning and Care
Maintenance of porcelain is simple. Clean with a soft cloth and mild soapy water; harsh cleaners are unnecessary and may damage any decorations or glaze. Drying thoroughly after cleaning helps preserve the shine and prevents discolouration. For knobs with metal parts, clean them gently as well and, if needed, treat lightly against oxidation.
