Why are screws included?
Many ironmongery products come with screws as standard. These aren’t chosen at random—they’re matched to the product. Especially with cast-iron and wrought-iron hardware or coat hooks, the screws are often made from a slightly softer steel. This suits the look and ensures the heads match the finish of the hardware.
Note on softer screws
Because these screws are softer, they need a little extra care:
-
Turn them in slowly and straight.
-
Prefer hand tools or a cordless driver on low speed.
-
Avoid excessive force to prevent snapped screws or damaged heads.
Handled this way, the screw stays intact and the product is mounted neatly.
Suitable for wood, not for masonry
Unless specific products include wall plugs, the supplied screws are wood screws. They’re ideal for fixing into wood or wooden substrates. Mounting on stone, concrete or plasterboard? Wood screws are less suitable. In that case, use:
-
Quality wall plugs appropriate to the substrate.
-
Stronger screws where extra load capacity is needed.
That way you combine the right fixing with the original look of the hardware.
Practical tips
-
Always check that the screw length suits the thickness of the material.
-
In wood, drill a small pilot hole to avoid splitting or a skewed installation.
